Audit of service providers for occupational safety, health and environmental protection
SeSaM qualification of service providers
Before being awarded a contract, service providers have to answer questions of a checklist on occupational health and safety and environmental protection to prove that they meet the high standards of utilities. Afterwards, a central listing is made in a database at the vgbe office.
Utilities (clients) can assume that the listed companies generally meet the legal requirements in the areas of occupational safety, health and environmental protection. Thus, own extensive and costly supplier evaluation can be dispensed with.
SeSaM is an effective aid to fulfilling due diligence in supplier selection. The database is available to utilities.
The standardised testing procedure in SeSaM also grants security to service providers in their cooperation with utilities. It also helps them to set up their own OSH system. Competitive advantages due to serious differences in occupational safety, health and environmental protection are largely excluded.
Safety engineers from operators (including RWE, mark-e), GfBU and vgbe developed this management system for prequalification. SeSaM is technically supported by the vgbe Technical Group “Occupational Health and Safety”.

Emden Workshop Offshore Wind Turbines - Occupational Medicine -
Offshore suitability survey
Medical care options for offshore workplaces are significantly limited. This results in special requirements and conditions for the aptitude test and supervision of employees.
The new offshore wind energy parks in German coastal waters require regulations for the health protection of workers who erect, operate and maintain these plants in the high seas. For this purpose, among other things, the German Society for Maritime Medicine (DGMM) drew up a recommendation for the aptitude test for activities on German offshore installations.
For this reason, a vgbe workshop is held annually in Emden for occupational physicians who provide medical screening for offshore workplaces.

Market-in-market
vgbe contractor database
The internet presentation “market-in-market” lists those contractors (have agreed to the publication) who have proven their suitability to the German nuclear power plant operators in accordance with the safety standard KTA 1401 \”General Requirements for Quality Assurance”.
KTA 1401 specifies the requirements for product- and system-related quality assurance of contractors. These are assessed and confirmed accordingly by the German nuclear power plant operators. This means that the contractors fulfil the requirements for the proper execution of nuclear contracts – including the fulfilment of the quality required therein – and are allowed to provide safety-relevant supplies and services for German nuclear power plants.
The operators of German nuclear power plants (EnBW Kernkraft GmbH, PreussenElektra GmbH, RWE Nuclear GmbH as well as Vattenfall Nuclear Energy GmbH) have joined forces in the vgbe Working Group “Contractor Assessment and Qualification” to assess contractors required by nuclear power plants according to common specifications and criteria. The assessment results are recognised across all operators. The assessment is carried out product- and system-related at the contractor’s premises, taking into account his technical facilities, his personnel, the quality assurance system, his in-house and external monitoring as well as the feedback of experience from the execution of nuclear contracts.
Further information on the “Nuclear Safety Standards Commission (KTA)” and on downloading the Safety Standard KTA 1401 can be found at www.kta-gs.de.
