- Importance of lithium batteries in the energy industry continues to grow
- Handling of lithium batteries requires new challenges
- VGB recommendation provides practice-oriented assistance on the basis of rules and contractual agreements
To date, there are no regulations under public law for the storage and handling of lithium batteries. Therefore, the “VGB Project Group on Working Materials” has prepared the now published practical guide “to the handling of lithium batteries with regard to hazardous substances law and fire protection”. This is beyond the previously known and published information on hazards and damage prevention and deals with the aspects of hazardous substances law and fire protection. The following publications, among others, were taken into account:
- DIN VDE 0132:2018-07, Abschnitt 5.1.5
- TRGS 510 (Dec. 2020)
- VdS 3103:2019-06
- VdS 3856:2019-06
For individual cases of the use of lithium batteries, reference is made to necessary actions if these are already part of the above-mentioned publications. The VGB recommendation is intended to support companies in ensuring proper handling of lithium batteries.
