German-Indian energy partnership: vgbe supports capacity building for the flexible operation of coal-fired power plants

Three events – one goal: sharing knowledge and experiences on the flexible operation of thermal power plants within the Indian power sector.

Three events – one goal: sharing knowledge and experiences on the flexible operation of thermal power plants within the Indian power sector. The first highlight was a one-week simulator training that took place from 3 to 7 October 2023 and in which operators from the generating company Mahagenco were able to familiarize themselves with the topic hands-on. A team from STEAG India conducted the training – its curriculum was developed jointly by experts from STEAG India, the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and vgbe. The feedback from the participants was so positive that two more training sessions are planned this year.

Workshops under the theme “Flexible Thermal Power Plants: Bridge to a Decarbonized Energy System” were held in Bengaluru and Raipur on 9 and 12 October 2023. In addition to contributions from vgbe and TU Vienna in person, Iqony and RWE provided insights into the operation of thermal power plants in Europe, battery storage projects and repurposing concepts for power plant sites. The many questions and lively discussions during the events showed that the topics were of utmost interests for the more than 150 participants. The workshops were jointly organized by the Excellence Enhancement Center, GIZ and vgbe. Under the auspices of the German-Indian Energy Forum these three institutions have been working together for many years.
