The preparation of a fire protection standard for offshore wind energy is the common objective of an agreement between the Bundesverband der Windparkbetreiber Offshore (Federal Association of Wind Farm Operators Offshore,BWO) and the vgbe energy*. The binding standard will support the long-term safety of people, the environment as well as the infrastructure in the offshore wind industry. Additionally, efforts and the cost for planning, construction, and the operation of offshore wind parks will be reduced.
The vgbe energy has an outstanding experience in the preparation and application of numerous standards including a fire protection standard for onshore wind turbines. The BWO completes this through a comprehensive operational expertise. Additionally, manufacturers as well as relevant authorities are to be involved in the preparation process of the standard. The process has already started, as the interdisciplinary working group regularly meets. The completion date for the project is expected for the end of 2023.
The harmonisation of the regulatory framework for offshore fire protection is crucial considering the ambitious goals of the new German government for the future growth of offshore wind energy. The Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrografie (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, BSH) expressly welcomes the initiative and takes a consultative role.
