On 11 October 2022, the
4th Turkish-German Energy Forum (TGEF) took place in Berlin.

During the forum, the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) Robert Habeck and the Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Dönmez signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of hydrogen economy.

The vgbe, which coordinates the activities of Working Group 5 “flexibility of existing thermal power plants” on behalf of the BMWK, contributed to the event in various ways. vgbe Managing Director Dr. Oliver Then explained the advantages of repurposing solutions for coal power plant sites at the panel “Enhancing Sector Coupling Towards a Decarbonized Energy System”. In a plenary session, Dr. Claudia Weise, who manages international projects at vgbe and coordinates the TGEF working group 5 from the German side, reported about the projects in the area of flexibilization.

The current focus is on a pre-feasibility study in the Turkish power plant “18 Mart Çan Termik Santrali”, with aims at demonstrating flexible power plant operation. This power plant is operated by Electricity Generation Corporation EÜAS, Türkiye’s largest state-owned electricity company. The EÜAS is also responsible for coordinating the activities of Working Group 5 from the Turkish side. After completing the pre-feasibility study, the focus should be on how innovative technological solutions – such as storage systems, renewable energies as well as sector coupling and carbon capture and usage concepts – can be integrated into existing power plants.
