vgbe | Congress 2023

Security of supply and energy transition - mission impossible? Under this slogan this year's vgbe Congress took place on September 20 and 21, 2023 at the Steigenberger Hotel am Kanzleramt in Berlin with around 200 participants from 17 nations.

Security of supply and energy transition - mission impossible?

Under this slogan this year’s vgbe Congress took place on September 20 and 21, 2023 at the Steigenberger Hotel am Kanzleramt in Berlin with around 200 participants from 17 nations. The focus was on the question how to harmonise security of energy supply and the associated challenges of the future the energy mix? These and other central questions were discussed with the international audience within the framework of a multifold congress programme.

Traditionally also this vgbe Congress was opened by the vgbe Chairman, Dr Georgios Stamatelopoulos. He reviewed the past year in his opening speech and explained that the challenges for the energy sector had not become smaller since the last Congress in Antwerp, but had changed dramatically. Despite the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the energy transition, i.e., the path towards sustainable, low-emission and climate-neutral supply, remains the leading topic in Germany and the EU. Dr Stamatelopoulos emphasised the achievements already made by the energy sector in terms of security of supply and climate protection and outlined the necessary expansion in wind energy and photovoltaics. In this context, he said there were several challenges to be overcome, which, in addition to issues such as a shortage of skilled personnel, bottlenecks in global supply chains and the reduction of bureaucracy, also lay in the technical area. According to the vgbe board, vgbe energy e.V. offers valuable help being the technical and operator association, which was also reflected in the current congress programme with much stronger technical focus.

The opening speech was followed by the vgbe Innovation Award 2023, an honour which vgbe FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG has granted for innovations and groundbreaking ideas in the work of young people in research and development since 1981. This year, two winners received the prize, which is endowed with 5,000 euros each:
  • Dr-Ing Weihan Li, for his work on a “Cloud-based battery management system” and
  • Sebastian Raczka (M.Sc.) for his work on “Edge computing and virtualisation techniques for the integration of automation systems in distribution networks”.
In addition to the presentation of the two Innovation Awards, it was a very special pleasure for Dr Stamatelopoulos to also honour his esteemed vgbe Board colleagues Roger Miesen, Michael J Frank and Hubertus Altmann as well as Professor Günter Scheffknecht from the vgbe Scientific Advisory Board. Roger Miesen and Michael J Frank, as members of the Board of vgbe energy e.V., have made a very special contribution to the vgbe community work. In times of change and transition, they have contributed decisively to adapting the vgbe work to a changed environment and member needs and to consolidating the role of vgbe in Germany and Europe.

Michael J. Frank (2nd from right), Roger Miesen (3rd from right), and Professor Günter Scheffknecht (1st from left) were awarded the vgbe Gold Badge of Honour. Hubertus Altmann (3rd from left) received the Guilleaume Commemorative Medal

vgbe awarded Roger Miesen and Michael J Frank with the vgbe badge of honour in gold. The same honour went to Professor Günter Scheffknecht, who, as a member of the vgbe Scientific Advisory Board, the associated Presidium and as member of the Board of Trustees of the vgbe FORSCHUNGSSTIFTUNG, promoted the exchange between industry and science for many years, gave impulses for new developments and helped to shape the association´s research activities.

Hubertus Altmann has worked tirelessly and extraordinarily for the common work and interests in energy supply as 1st Vice Chairman, member of the Board of Directors as well as committee member and committee chairman of vgbe energy e.V. He has particularly promoted the symbiosis of conventional and new energy technologies and given forward-looking impulses for the further development of state-of-the-art technologies in energy engineering.

vgbe awarded Hubertus Altmann with the Guilleaume commemorative medal, which bears the name of Dr Max Guilleaume, one of the founders of the association.

Panel discussion with Dr Oliver Then, Dr Philipp Steinberg, Kerstin Andreae, Christian Seyfert, Dr Philipp Nellessen and Dr Georgios Stamatelopoulos
Following the awards and honours, the topic of security of supply was discussed. The focus was on issues such as the importance of security of supply for industry and society, the role and status of the power plant strategy, the status of the accelerated expansion of renewable energies and grids, the status of further energy infrastructure, e.g., for H2 grids, LNG terminals, storage facilities, as well as the necessary retention of knowledge and the associated shortage of skilled staff. The conclusion to be drawn from this discussion is that, on the one hand, the first positive developments can be seen, e.g., in the acceleration of approval procedures or regulatory design. On the other hand, however, there are still considerable design issues that need to be addressed quickly by policymakers in order to even begin to achieve the ambitious goals. In this respect, the industry (companies and associations) has concrete proposals from practice on the table, which should be taken up by the government. The first day of the event continued with the key note speech by Professor Dr Mojib Latif on the topic of “Climate Change – Apocalypse or Hope?” Professor Latif impressively described the ways in which climate change has already manifested itself and the grave consequences that would result for humanity if decisive changes were not made and decarbonisation implemented in large steps. A massive expansion of renewable energies, a technology-open use of all avoidance technologies including nuclear energy and CCUS and the development of adaptation strategies for the irreversible part of climate change are for him the decisive pillars of this transformation. In his view, we hold the options for a hopeful approach to this greatest of all challenges (but not the only one) in our hands and should not forget: Climate protection must be fun if everyone is to join in.
Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif

Following the key note, the second panel discussion was held under this year’s Congress motto “Energy transition – mission impossible?” Here, questions on decarbonisation and the associated challenges also in the other sectors, such as heat supply, as well as the role of Germany and the EU in international climate protection were discussed. Essentially, it was stated that climate protection can only be successful in the global interaction of all nations, but that the industrialised countries and Germany in particular have a special responsibility to develop and implement technology options that can then be used globally. In doing so, however, it must be weighed up not to overtax the capacity of society and the economy, so that in the end it can also serve as a positive example for other countries.

On the second day of the Congress, the programme continued with parallel sections on topics of digitalisation, cyber security, energy storage, hydrogen, power2X, advanced energy technologies and transformation and innovation projects. The topics were discussed in detail and with great commitment, whereby the adapted Congress format with shorter contributions and longer joint discussion elements had a positive effect.

Once again, there was ample opportunity for networking at this Congress. Existing and new contacts could be deepened or established and the get-together on the evening prior the event as well as the evening event in the Zollpackhof provided a pleasant setting for personal and professional exchange.
At the end of the successful vgbe Congress 2023, it can be concluded that the vgbe community is on its way – from mission impossible? to mission completed!
The vgbe Congress team would like to thank all speakers, participants and partners for their valuable contributions to the successful vgbe Congress 2023 and is looking forward to the next vgbe Congress, which will take place on September 11 and 12, 2024 against the picturesque backdrop of Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
