Thermal Power

The energy transition and the associated transformation of the energy system are among the greatest global challenges of our time. There is broad consensus on the indispensable expansion of renewables in order to minimise greenhouse gases and achieve climate targets, as well as to secure independent supply through renewable energies.

In 2022, 46% of the electricity demand was already covered by renewable energies like wind and solar power. However, the energy supply system must function around the clock and at any time of the year, i.e. even when the sun does not shine sufficiently or during wind lulls, alternatives to renewable energies must be available that are then able to supply sufficient energy. Until a comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure, power-to-X solutions and market-ready storage technologies are developed, thermal plants will have to take over these tasks. Fossil gaseous fuels and solid fuels such as coal, biomass and waste will continue to contribute to a secure energy supply in the coming years.
